Jeez, those early Disney movies don’t hold up at ALL, do they? Between the rampant sexism and the institutionalized racism – remember the Siamese cats in Lady & the Tramp? The crows from Dumbo? OMG, Uncle Reemus? – shit got pretty dark, yo. And revisiting the 1953 animated classic Peter Pan is rather upsetting. Turns out Peter was waaaaay creepier than you remember.
You know, the story of the teen boy who stalks young kids through their windows, and kidnaps them to a faraway island where they are sold into slavery by the adults. But it gets worse. How about all the attempted murder of minors! That’s fun for the kids. (via Geeks of Doom)
And the ceaseless Native American clichés. HOLY COW.
The kicker here is the suggestion that Peter Pan might actually be the Darling children’s actual father! Which means that when Wendy and Peter… oh dear… and Tinkerbell– by trying to keep them apart – is actually doing the right thing … it’s all a lot to digest.
