Today in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, actor/musician/fashionista Janelle Monáe officially came out. There has long been speculation about her sexuality, especially with her special relationship with actor Tessa Thompson who is featured in her music video for her single PYNK (see World of Wonder writer James St. James coverage from earlier this month). Monáe told Rolling Stone that she has enjoyed relationships with both men and women and identifies as pansexual:

“Being a queer black woman in America, as someone who has been in relationships with both men and women, I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker.”

Monáe said her androgynous public persona was her way of protecting her identity:

“I felt like I didn’t look like a stereotypical black female artist.”

She had been dropping hints about her sexuality in her music with the songs such as Mushrooms & Roses and Q.U.E.E.N.

In the interview, Monáe did not discuss her dating life or the rumors about Thompson. She did say:

“I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.”

In 2016, Monáe had major roles in two amazing films, Hidden Figures and Moonlight. Her music has brought her six Grammy Award nominations. She won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble of Hidden Figures.

Her third studio album Dirty Computer will be released tomorrow April 27, 2018. She has already released the first three singles from the album Django Jane, Make Me Feel, Pynk.
