If you look closely at Hieronymus Bosch’s 16th century painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, you’ll discover music written upon the posterior of one of the many tortured denizens of Hell. Musician Jim Spalnik transcribed it into modern notation (assuming the second line of the staff is C, as was common for chants of this era) and played it on a lute, harp, and hurdy-gurdy. “The intro and outro are employ the ‘Devil’s Interval,’” he writes, “and the last couple of measures are conjecture on my part. You could say I just pulled them out of my… well, you know.” Enjoy the mournful and somewhat creepy 600-year-old butt music from Hell. It’s really quite amazing.
