The 2014 Tony Awards: All The Winners & Weirdest Moments

I think I can say that was EASILY the gayest Tony’s ever – and that’s saying a LOT. (A few years ago, when Neil Patrick Harris was hosting, he sang a song by Marc Shaiman with the lyric by Scott Wittman, “It couldn’t be gayer, if Liza was Mayor.” It could be, and it was.) As the host, Hugh Jackman said at the top of the show, “Whether you like men dressed as women or drag queens, there’s something for everyone on Broadway this season.” Darko Tresnjak thanked his husband and Alan Cumming felt up his cast with rouged nipples. Jackman was the perfect host, charming, handsome and just a little corny. You might think he’s dorky but he makes your grandmother feel comfortable. I mean, he DID do a Music Man rap with LL Cool J and TI – that was kinda painful. Most of the musical numbers were tolerable. (After a while Broadway tunes kinda get on your nerves.) Aladdin, I could do without and I’d rather have elective surgery than sit through Rocky, but I guess I’m not really their target audience. (Did you catch Clint Eastwood mock talking to a chair on a bump to a commercial break? And there was all sorts of weird business going to commercial breaks; card playing with Sting, piano polishing. Funny-ish.) James Monroe Iglehart did a “Praise, shout!” after his win for Aladdin, but the show stopper had to be RuPaul introducing Neil Patrick Harris in Hedwig. Performing “Sugar Daddy”, NPH swung from the speakers, gave Tony winner Mark Rylance a “car wash”, licked Samuel L. Jackson‘s glasses, bounced on Sting‘s lap, flopped down on Kevin Bacon and then kissed boyfriend David Burtka on live TV (twice). And then he WON! Jonathan Groff made a John Travolta joke when introducing “the WICKED-ly TALENT-ed” Idina Menzel and the duet with Beautiful star Jessie Mueller and Carol King was pretty amazing. The whole thing went on and on FOREVER, with 52,000 commercials but it was free and for the most part, fun and exciting. Plus, knowing that it was happening just up the street made it feel like a hometown production. Which it was. Hey, come to New York see a Broadway show!
