In January, Crystal Moselle’s documentary The Wolfpack debuted to raves at Sundance, winning the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary and a deal from Magnolia Pictures. The film, is a portrait of the Angulo brothers, a group of home-schooled teenagers rarely allowed to leave their Lower East Side apartment for their entire lives. Moselle ran into them on the street and the rest is BOYStory. They used movies (which they memorized and often re-create, see video below) as their portal into world outside. It’s amazing how Moselle’s camera seems to empower these young men, to push them to venture outside the apartment and see the “real” world. Their notions of their world have been, to a great extent, formed by what is captured on film; finding themselves on the other side of the camera must be truly a trip through the looking glass. These are true 21st century boys.
