As you may have heard, President Obama finally has his own Twitter account after 6 years. He has nearly 2 million followers, as of last look. His first Tweet:
“Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.”
But the racist trolls didn’t waste any time showing their true colors. For your disgust, here are just a few of the “welcome” messages our President received on his newly-created personal account. If this is not a clear enough sign that Barack Obama has been dealing with for 6 years, I don’t know what is…?
I know – revolting. I have a point in showing these threats and hatred he received here:
1. it’s surely the minority, most response is positive
2. threats are taken VERY seriously…
So far, there’s no evidence just yet on what happens when users tweet threats directly to Obama. But there’s a precedent of people ending up behind bars for contacting The White House directly with a threat. Threatening the President of the United States is a specific crime, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The Secret Service even has a dedicated team called the Internet Threat Desk. A Texas woman named Teddy Bear Paradise (no joke) was sentenced to almost two years for mailing Obama a letter promising to kill him, for example, and New York’s Christine Wright-Darrisaw got almost three years for calling the White House and describing to a staffer in detail how she’d kill the President. So, unlike trashing Kim Kardashian or even other elected official, these guys might just get a surprise knock on their door.
But there’s at least one person who thinks the @POTUS account is great – former POTUS Bill Clinton. He Tweeted, to which the current POTUS shot back:
