Iris by al Maysles

Albert Maysles, along with his brother David, was one of the greatest documentary film directors of all time. He directed the Rolling Stones in Gimme Shelter, he directed 6 different films about legendary artists Christo and Jean-Claude, and he brought Little Edie Beale to the world in Grey Gardens.  He captured reality before it was on TV and he changed the way we all see the world.  Without Al, there would be no Jinx Monsoon in the Snatch Game!

Jinx Monsoon as Little Edie

Sadly, Al passed away on March 5th of this year.  Al’s work depicted specific people and events but it treated broad themes like beauty, humanity, art, struggle, love, and what it means to just be.  For his final masterpiece, Al captured fashion and New York legend Iris Apfel and, if this trailer is any indication, it is not going to disappoint:

World of Wonder loves documentaries and we love strong, unique women.  According to her Wikipedia page:

Iris Apfel took part in several design restoration projects, including work at the White House for nine presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, Ford, and Clinton.

That’s NINE Presidents!  WOW, this is going to be a great doc.

Iris comes to theaters on April 29th.  More info and tickets available here.
