I was more than a little worried. How could Lady Gaga follow John Legend and Common? They BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN. And Gaga, let’s face it, has been on a bit of a downward spiral lately. ArtPop was a big FartPoop. And her little monsters didn’t really care about her journey into the All-American songbook with Tony Bennett. This could very well have been the nail in her career. You groaned a little every time host Neil Patrick Harris said she was coming up next, didn’t you? Then when you heard him announce she was singing a Sound of Music medley, you AAAAAALMOST turned the channel. But you hung in there. And you were rewarded. BOY, how you were rewarded! Gaga was in rare form. She sang, no, by god, she WAILED on those songs, showing us a versatility we had all but forgotten she possessed.
As one YouTuber put it:
“Gaga here makes a historical statement.. that Pop Singers must be able to sing well (that the ex-porn star Madonna had persuaded us for years it was the opposite!).. Not only she sings an Iconic song identified with a true Goddess (Andrews) and does not make a fool of herself.. but she actually makes it her own and sings her Heart out of it… and yes it is semi operatic placement! Her middle voice has amazing dark colors.. when she began Edelweiss I went ballistic! I teared up.. she brings back the era of Streisand, Garland, Fitzgerald etc.”
Indeed.
Gaga soared last night, and her performance probably gave her another 20 years of shelf life. Let’s watch it again and again and again.
