Here’s a video farewell to the filmmakers, producers, actors & actresses who’ve left us this last year. It was filmed beautifully at the Swan House and includes Mickey Rooney, Joan Rivers, Mike Nichols, Lauren Bacall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Eli Wallach, Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Shirley Temple and too many others. TCM does this sort of thing SO well…
UPDATE: Just after I posted this, news of another early film legend’s passing… Luise Rainer just died at 104. Rainer became the first person to win an Oscar in consecutive years, taking the Best Actress for The Great Ziegfeld in 1936 and The Good Earth in 1937. Only 4 other actors have ever repeated back-to-back Oscar wins: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Jason Robards and Tom Hanks. But soon after, she walked away from Hollywood. Rainer made one more film — Hostages in 1943 — but spent most of her later life in England. She made occasional film and television appearances, including an episode of The Love Boat in 1984.
