RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 winner Sharon Needles pays homage to the ultimate nightlife icon, Amanda Lepore, in the new video for her single “I Wish I Were Amanda Lepore.”
Sharon and I talked about the song in a 2012 Daily Freak Show episode:
“The song is super emotional to me. I wrote the poem ten years ago and its been rewritten and rewritten and rewritten. I always said if I was ever famous, this would be a song I would do. It’s really about idol worship and insecurity … I wrote the song and I thought it was great. I was a little insensitive, there were lines in it like ‘broken ribs and bloated lips.’ I had a phone interview with Mandy and she said ‘There’s just so much more to me than my surgery. The world accepts me for how I look, we can talk about something else. I’m more [than] a model, I’m a role model.’ So the song completely got a rewrite. It’s kind of this juxtaposition, a back and forth about insecurities about not looking as perfect as Amanda and then Amanda saying there’s beauty in everything and even perfection has a beating heart. It’s a love song!”
