RuPaul’s Drag Race, produced by World of Wonder Productions is stretching the idea of broadcast longevity. It’s seeing its highest ratings in a decade, making it one of the top-rated original shows on cable.

RuPaul snatched two consecutive Emmys for best reality-show host in 2016 and 2017. RuPaul’s DragCon drew nearly 80,000 people to New York and Los Angeles last year. DragCon L.A. happens this week, May 11 to 13 at the L.A. Convention Center. WOW founders, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato just talked to L.A. Confidential. Barbara drag is not a fad.

“Drag is here to stay. These kids, like Kim Chi, Alyssa Edwards and Naomi Smalls travel around the world. Fans wait at airports to see them. It’s kinda crazy.

What happened to rap 30 years ago—that’s what’s happening to drag right now.””

Bailey and Barbato are currently working on a doc about late artist and AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz out of WOW’s Hollywood headquarters in an art deco building bought in 2000 out of foreclosure.

Bailey says,

“It’s not quite [Warhol’s] Factory, but it has that kind of energy, with all of these artists, young filmmakers, drag queens, whatever, working here.”

If in town the pair might be be found lunching on chicken potpie across the street at Hollywood classic, Musso & Frank. But won’t find them in the editing bay at the same time. Barbara says,

“Because I’m into making things broad and Fenton’s into making things deep.”

Whatever the formula, it seems to keep working. Bravo gentlemen.
