Kaia Gerber Lies on a Couch and Critics Are in an UPROAR

Chanel is under fire for using 16-year-old supermodel Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford‘s look-alike daughter) in a new ad that critics say “sexualizes” her.

In the talked-about shot, “Kaia wears a short, tweed mini dress while reclining on a chaise long.”

Except, WORD POLICE, that’s no chaise long, that’s just a damn couch. I mean, really.

But that’s neither here nor there, I suppose.

We’re supposed to be questioning whether or not Kaia is posed in a provocative manner or if the clothes are somehow not fitting for a 16-year-old girl.

One commenter on Facebook wrote: “Seriously? A 16 year old? What exactly are you promoting?”

A second Facebook user added: “She is beautiful. A beautiful girl. Too young.”

Another said: “It is no doubt that she is a beautiful young lady… too young, too barely dressed as a 16 years old in Gabrielle Chanel owned apartment [sic.]”

Is Kaia’s Chanel campaign teetering on the edge of over-sexualisation? Have we made any improvement since the 1980s when a 15-year-old Brooke Shields uttered “Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”

It’s up for debate.

I don’t know. I get that she’s awfully young for the modeling industry, but this particular picture doesn’t exactly get me riled up. Lots of 16-year-olds wear little dresses – little tennis dresses and barely-there athletic wear and what-not. And she’s just lying on the couch. Not splayed out in a sexual manner. I certainly don’t think this picture is up there with the Calvin Klein/kiddie porn shoots of the ’90s – now THAT was intentional.

What do YOU think?
