Yesterday, we reported that an Etsy designer had fashioned a sex toy in the (imagined) shape of the Shape of Water monster’s penis. It was smooth and spotted in a lovely blue and green hue with ‘ruffled, gill-like” ridges and a “wave” shape, and really seemed like something the monster might be sporting.
NOT SO FAST, though. Director Guillermo del Toro was asked about the dildo at an Oscar screening of his film, and he had THIS to say:
“I don’t think it’s an accurate representation,” he told the audience. ” “It’s some form of fan art…I guess. I’m sure Dunkirk doesn’t have that problem.”
To which the audience laughed and laughed…
Actor Doug Jones (who played the monster in question) ALSO takes issue with the sex toy.
“With a light chuckle, I can tell you it’s not exactly what I’d hoped for. I’ve actually had several real action figures made of my creature roles in the past — all done in good taste. After pouring my heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into this romantic, beautiful, magical role, the last thing I want to be remembered for is a silicone appendage that comes in two sizes.”
