It has been reported that Saudi Arabian authorities have carried out raids after a video featuring a same-sex wedding ceremony went viral. The short clip showing two men in traditional Saudi dress at what looks like a wedding ceremony drew outrage and homophobic comments.

Messages blamed foreigners for spreading “corruption”, while others took on the country’s new ruler, Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, who has promised to bring the country into the 21st century.

The video has sparked a witch hunt in the country as authorities try to track down all the men involved.

Homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia, where LGBTQ people face imprisonment, violent punishment, and even the death penalty.

Saudi newspaper al-Marsd reports that the wedding took place near Mecca last week. The newspaper reports that the security services have carried out raids and detained several people connected with the incident.

An official in Mecca Ali bin Youssef al-Sharif said that investigations were still ongoing “in preparation for their referral to the public prosecutor”. He warned Saudi citizens that they must adhere to the “morals and virtuous values of this blessed country”.

Some speculate that the video was actually a parody.

The U.S. Government enjoys cushy relationships with Saudi Arabia, which is a major ally in the Middle East. Our leaders have been reluctant to challenge Saudi Arabia over Human Rights abuses in the past.

President Trump repeatedly used LGBTQ Rights in Saudi Arabia to attack Hillary Clinton, yet he failed to actually bring up LGBTQ Rights during his Presidential trip to Saudi Arabia last year. Although, who knows what that lighted orb was all about.

During the 2016 presidential race, Trump lashed out at the former Secretary of State over The Clinton Foundation taking money from the country. He tweeted:

“Saudi Arabia and many of the countries that gave vast amounts of money to the Clinton Foundation want women as slaves and to kill gays. Hillary must return all money from such countries!”

He also raised the issue during a televised Presidential debate, claiming:

“It’s a criminal enterprise. Saudi Arabia giving $25 million… all of these countries. You talk about women and women’s rights? So these are people that push gays off business — off buildings. These are people that kill women and treat women horribly. And yet you take their money.”

Yet, Trump failed to bring up the topic during his visit while signing a lucrative arms deal that helps solidify the regime’s control. A White House statement said:

“… the visit focused on underscoring the deep and longstanding commitment of the United States to the security, stability, and prosperity of Saudi Arabia, as well as working jointly to address challenges to regional peace and security.”

Saudi Arabia is one of the most barbaric countries on the planet when it comes to LGBTQ rights. Gay people face public flogging, torture and even execution. Vigilante attacks are common, while authorities are known to go “hunting” for gay people.

Still, Trump said:

“I have always heard about the splendor of your country and the kindness of your citizens, but words do not do justice to the grandeur of this remarkable place and the incredible hospitality you have shown us from the moment we arrived. I stand before you as a representative of the American People, to deliver a message of friendship and hope. That is why I chose to make my first foreign visit a trip to the heart of the Muslim world, to the nation that serves as custodian of the two holiest sites in the Islamic Faith.”

This is the same man who said at a campaign stop in New Hampshire:

“We have a problem in this country; it’s called Muslims. We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things. You know, a lot of people are saying that, and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking at that and plenty of other things.”

Trump told Fox News in 2016:

“I would certainly look at the idea of closing mosques in the United States. I would hate to do it, but it’s something that you’re going to have to strongly consider because some of the ideas and some of the hatred — the absolute hatred — is coming from these areas.”

Trump also stated that he is open to the idea of creating a database of all Muslims in the USA. Maybe V.P. Mike Pence will convince him to have a LGBTQ registry also.
