House Of Cards, Netflix’s first original series, has been on hold ever since sexual abuse allegations surfaced against Kevin Spacey, but today, at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in NYC, Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, announced that the streaming service is going forward with the final season of the series.

According to Variety, the showbiz daily, the final season of House Of Cards will have just eight episodes. Previous seasons have been 13 episodes long. It will focus on President Claire Underwood, played to perfection by Robin Wright. Spacey will not be involved in the project. Netflix announced last month that it would no longer be working with him.

Production will resume in January.

House Of Cards is political thriller created by Beau Willimon. It is an adaptation of his 1990 BBC series of the same name, based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. The first thirteen-episode season premiered on February 1, 2013, on Netflix.

Set in Washington, D.C., it is the story of Congressman Frank Underwood (Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District and House Majority Whip. After being passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, he begins an elaborate plan to become president using ruthless pragmatism, predomination, and power. He is helped by his wife, Claire.

House Of Cards has been very popular. It received 33 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Spacey, and Outstanding Lead Actress for Wright, for each of its first five seasons. It is the first streaming television series to receive major Emmy nominations. The show also earned eight Golden Globe Award nominations, with Wright winning in 2014 and Spacey winning in 2015.

On October 30, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making sexual advances toward him when Rapp was 14-years-old, In the wake of Rapp’s accusation, numerous other men came forward with allegations that Spacey had sexually harassed or assaulted them, with some detailing inappropriate behavior on the set of the Netflix show itself. As a result, Netflix cut all ties with him, locked him off the set of House Of Cards, and shelved their film Gore, a bio-pic about gay writer Gore Vidal with Spacey in the title role. On November 3, Netflix announced that Spacey had been fired from the House Of Cards.

Along with announcing that the show will be moving forward, Sarandos also described the revamped final season as a good creative conclusion to the series’ larger story. House Of Cards writers have been working tirelessly to find a new direction for the show in light of Spacey’s departure. I can’t wait to find out how they dispatch with his character! Maybe he can be eaten alive by boy cannibalizes like Sebastian Venable in Suddenly, Last Summer (1958), which has a screenplay by Vidal!
